4 cups tart apples, peeled and chopped or sliced (I use granny smith)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 cup packed brown sugar
3/4 cup flour
1 cup old fashioned oats
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (I use freshly ground)
1/2 cup butter, cut into pieces
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Place apples in a medium bowl and gently toss with cinnamon, sugar and lemon juice. Arrange in an 8×8 pan.
In a medium bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, oatmeal, cinnamon, nutmeg and stir until combined. Add diced butter and using clean fingertips, rub butter into dry mixture until it comes together into small crumbles. (You can also do this in an electric mixer, just combine ingredients on low speed).
Evenly spread oatmeal mixture over apples and bake 30-40 minutes or until topping is golden brown and apples are tender.
